Exporting Gift Cards
Export your gift cards to a CSV or Excel file, across one store or all your connected stores at once. It's the quickest way to get a gift-card ledger out of Shopify: each card's remaining balance, what it was issued for, whether it's still active, and who owns or received it.
For the wizard itself — picking columns, formats, destinations, and schedules — see the exporting overview.
What you can export
In Simple mode you pick from a curated list of the fields merchants export most. The default set mirrors the Gift Cards dashboard; these are the most useful fields:
| Field | What it is |
|---|---|
Code | The masked gift card code (e.g. ••••ABCD). |
Status | Computed status: Active, Disabled, or Expired. |
Balance | The remaining balance amount. |
Balance Currency | Currency code of the balance. |
Initial Value | The original value when the card was issued. |
Last 4 | The final four characters of the card code. |
Expires On | When the card expires (blank means never). |
Deactivated At | When the card was deactivated, if it was. |
Created At | When the card was created. |
Updated At | When it was last updated. |
Note | Internal merchant note (not visible to the customer). |
Customer Email | Email of the owner customer the card is attached to. |
Recipient Email | Email of the recipient, for cards issued as gifts. |
Store | The store the card belongs to. |
The export can also pull the full Customer and Recipient profiles (names, phone, tags, marketing consent, orders count, total spent) and the issuing Order (name, total, financial and fulfillment status, issuing staff member). Switch to Template (Advanced) mode for the full column tree.
Filtering what you export
You can narrow a gift cards export to a common slice:
- Store — one store, several, or all of them.
- Status — Active or Disabled.
- Customer ID — cards attached to a specific customer.
- Issuing Order ID — cards minted by a specific order.
- Expires On / Deactivated At / Created At / Updated At — a date range.
The filter you set on an export in the wizard is part of that export and is independent of whatever filter you last used on the dashboard.
Exporting from the dashboard vs the wizard
From the Gift Cards dashboard, the Export button (the Export Builder) is the quick path — it exports exactly what you're looking at, scoped to Current page, Filtered, Selected, or All gift cards across your stores. Use the Export Wizard (Exports → New export) when you want to combine gift cards with other entities in one run, or save the export on a schedule.
Scheduling
Any gift cards export can run on a recurring daily, weekly, or monthly schedule instead of once — useful for a standing outstanding-balance report. See scheduled exports.
Tutorial: export active gift cards with outstanding balances
- Go to Exports → New export (
/exports/new). - In Step 1, tick Gift Cards and click Next.
- In Step 2, keep the default Simple columns (Code, Status, Balance, Initial Value, Expires On are included). Add the Status filter and choose Active.
- In Step 3, choose Excel (or CSV) and a destination, then click Next.
- In Step 4, name it "Active gift cards", choose Run now, and download the file — or Save as scheduled bundle for a recurring report.
- If you scheduled it, open Exports → Schedules and use Run now to test.
Permissions
- View Exports (
viewExports) — build and run gift card exports. - Download Exports (
downloadExports) — download the finished file.
Account owners have both. Grant them to team members from their permissions.
FAQ
Can I export gift cards to Excel? Yes — choose CSV or Excel (.xlsx) in Step
3. A combined multi-entity workbook is always Excel.
Does the export include the full card code? No — for security only the masked code and the Last 4 characters are exported, never the full code.
Does it include the balance? Yes — Balance, Balance Currency, and Initial Value are all Simple columns, and Status is computed as Active, Disabled, or Expired.
Can I export the recipient's details? Yes — the Recipient section carries the recipient's email, name, message, and send date for cards issued as gifts.
Can I export gift cards from all my stores at once? Yes — an export spans every connected store by default; add a store filter to narrow it.
Can I schedule the export? Yes — save it as a daily, weekly, or monthly schedule and each run rebuilds from live data.
