Exporting Customers

The Customers export gets your customer list out of Shopify as a CSV or Excel file — contact details, order history, saved addresses, tags, and marketing consent. It spans all your connected stores at once, so you can build one mailing list or CRM import across every shop, or narrow it to a single store. For the builder itself — column picker, formats, destinations, schedules — see the exporting overview.

What you can export

In Simple mode you pick from a curated list of the fields merchants export most. These are the key ones:

FieldWhat it is
First Name / Last Name / Display NameThe customer's name.
EmailThe customer's email address.
PhoneThe customer's phone number.
Total OrdersNumber of orders placed by the customer.
Total SpentLifetime amount spent, in the store currency.
TagsTags on the customer profile, comma-separated.
NoteA merchant note about the customer.
Tax ExemptWhether the customer is exempt from tax.
Created AtWhen the customer was added to the store.
Accepts Email MarketingWhether the customer consented to email marketing.
Email / SMS Marketing StateCurrent subscription state, opt-in level, and when consent was updated.
Default AddressCompany, street, city, province, country, and zip.
Account StateActive, disabled, invited, or declined (Classic Customer Accounts).
First / Last OrderThe id, name, and date of the customer's first and last order.
StoreWhich connected store the customer belongs to.

Switch to Template (Advanced) mode to open the full nested column tree — all saved addresses, timeline events, customer statistics, and metafields — and to rename column headers.

One row per customer

By default each customer is a single row. If you add expansion columns — Addresses, Events, or Metafields — the export adds one row per nested item for that customer, repeating the customer-level fields on each row. The Row # and Top Row columns mark where each customer begins. Keep to the flat fields above and you get exactly one row per customer.

Filtering what you export

Add a filter to narrow the export to a slice of your customers:

  • Store — one shop, or leave it open for all connected stores.
  • Account state — active, disabled, invited, or declined.
  • Email marketing — subscribed or not subscribed.
  • Orders count and total spent — thresholds for order history and spend.
  • Last order date — a date range for the most recent order.
  • Tags.

The filter you set in the wizard is part of the export and is independent of whatever filter you last used on the Customers dashboard.

Exporting from the dashboard vs the wizard

The Customers dashboard has an Export button (the Export Builder) for a quick single-entity export scoped to what you're looking at — Current page, Filtered (everything matching your dashboard filters), Selected (only ticked rows), or All customers across your stores. The full Export Wizard is the place to combine Customers with other entities in one run, or to save the export on a schedule.

Scheduling

Any customers export can run on a recurring daily, weekly, or monthly schedule, rebuilding from live data each time and delivering to your destination. See the exporting overview for details.

Tutorial: export email-subscribed customers to a mailing list

  1. Go to Exports → New export (/exports/new) and, in Step 1, tick Customers.
  2. In Step 2, keep Simple columns. Make sure Email, First Name, Last Name, and Accepts Email Marketing are selected.
  3. Add a filter: set Email marketing to Subscribed. Add a Store filter if you only want one shop.
  4. In Step 3, choose CSV and set the destination to Email.
  5. In Step 4, name the export and choose Run now.
  6. Open the CSV — one row per subscribed customer, ready for your email tool.

Permissions

  • View Exports (viewExports) — build the export and configure columns.
  • Download Exports (downloadExports) — download the finished file.

Account owners have both. Grant them to team members from their permissions.
